Because we can't hook up a logic analyzer and we don't have a detailed
understanding of what all the transactions should look like anyway...the
only way to troubleshoot these problems is by component replacement. Oh,
there are other things we can do such as checking the power supply lines
for good levels and steady supply and such, but in the end, it comes down
to component testing.
So one of the most useful diagnostic techniques for difficult situations
is to take the computer back to a simple working configuration and then
add components back in one or a few at a time until the problem comes
back. One is usually safe in concluding that the problem has something to
do with the last component added before the problem reemerges, but, of
course, there are exceptions....
And if you can't get the computer to a working configuration, then there
is probably something wrong with one of the few essential components.
