Just a reminder, because I don't think anyone's *quite* said it yet:

Too strong is just as bad as too weak.  This is why people are
suggesting attenuation.  But indeed, if you're not up the pole, move
the amp first; that may clean up both your over-signal problem and your
S/N problem.
