Ditto on my beta set-up.  I can close the front end and I'm presented 
with a desktop.  If I kill X all together, GDM appears and the 
auto-login timer shows up.

If there is a way to kill xfce/X when the frontend dies or is shut down, 
I'd like to know it.  :-)
