Note that it's not really for "hardware encoders only," anymore.  It
also helps with digital TV recordings.  (Though that's not at all
helpful for you.)

No.  It really doesn't have any disadvantages except when running on a
low power (basically underpowered) frontend.

Bad signal?  Bad cable?  Maxed-out volume settings?
