I agree that bitrate isn't the issue.  There's a point, however, when 
you could hit an unacceptable I/O wait level due to all the seeking 
required when writing to alternate files (one file per recording) if 
using a single disk.  That point may still be some huge number of 
recordings, so--as you mentioned--various data points from various users 
performing tests would be worthwhile.  When reporting info, it's 
important to mention the number of disks in use, whether root and/or 
mythtv and/or the MySQL DB are on the same disks and/or partitions, and 
probably more configuration information that I didn't think of...
