What filesystem are you using?  XFS and JFS give quicker deletes (I'm
using xfs right now and it works very nicely.  ext3 tends to delete
large files slowly (as does reiserfs) whereas xfs and jfs handle large
deletes in a second (http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/388).
