This is why you don't setup a Storage Group to point to the root
directory of any filesystem. You point the SG at a subdirectory, so if the
filesystem isn't mounted, then Myth won't write files to the wrong
filesystem.
My fileservers are sharing out their /HOSTNAME/video*/ directories. My
Storage Groups point to /HOSTNAME/video*/mythtv/recordings, so if a
filesystem
is not mounted for some reason, I don't end up with a full root partition on
the backend.

I think you misunderstood my statement.
My root partition is mounted at /
My boot is mounted on the /boot folder.
The mount point for my storage drive is the /recordings folder.
If, for some reason, my storage drive fails all my recordings will still go
into the /recordings folder but the drive will not be mounted so they will
be sent to the root partition.
I don't have file servers. I have a backend only, with 1 TB of space.
