can either of you try just for the hell of it to run on a single core? 
as in taskset -c 0 mythfrontend ?
Since most people ( including me sadly - with an AMD X2 be-2350 ) have 
issues playing HD, but never SD, it could look like it's either a 
threading issue or a context switching issue...  Don't know, it just 
seems odd that such fast CPUs are not able to play SD streams... it just 
has to be some sort of getting out sync due to the fact that either 
sound or video gets ahead...

Don't know... it's worth a try i guess.
