The cables you're talking about aren't converter cables. Your source
still needs to output component. I have a card that supports component
out via a little adapter type box and drive my old 1080i TV just fine.
There is a ton of overscan to deal with, but the quality to me seems
just as good as a dvi->HDMI cable I use on my LCD TV in the other
room.

Component can unofficially support 1080p.
