Since I can do 720p mpeg2 with only software decode under linux, 720p
mpeg2 software decode should be possible with a mythfrontend under
the native AppleTV OS. I've not tried.

Not really, while installing a mythfrontend under the AppleTV OS has
less steps than Linux, you still have to deal with getting into the
box. Remember no BIOS and the internal efi firmware checks to make
sure the EFI boot loader is proper. The various methods are
documented at the http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page. I am in
Linux because I know the nvidia 7300 can do hardware assisted 1080i
mpeg2 decode under this OS.
