In a lot of jurisdictions in the USA AC power wiring is supposed to be
done by a "licensed electrician", but a lot of homeowners ignore that fact.

Homeowners are taking more risk than they realize. If their insurance
companies discover unlicensed work they can refuse to pay off on a fire
claim, even if the fire was not caused by such work.

Low-voltage cabling can be done by the homeowner in most jurisdictions,
but contractor lobbies have tried to change that in some places.
