Actually it is possible to make it work.

As I recently learned, this wonderful feature already exists but you have to
enable multiple simultaneous recordings from the same capture card (assuming
it allows it). It will work, subject to not overloading the cpu and disk,
provided that the recordings are from the same mux, which they will
certainly be if they're back-to-back programs from the same channel.
The setting can be found in

utilities/setup >
setup >
mythbuntu [takes you to the mythbuntu control centre, different gui] >
mythtv configuration >
launch mythtv setup [will ask for permission to close mythbackend] >
[drops you automatically into...] main >
2. capture cards >
DVB:0 [or whatever the id of your capture card is] >
recording options >
max recordings >
[changed this from 1 to 2]
