You can check if the default logging options have been changed for the
backend by running:

 grep "ARGS=" /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend /etc/default/mythtv-backend 

You can also look at the log file to see what options mythbackend was
started with:

grep "Enabled verbose msgs" /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log

If that does not return any ouput stop and then restart the backend and
try again.

Just for reference my master BE on Mythbuntu 8.10 with three tuners and
roughly 30 recording rules generates between 100kb to 300kb a day of log
files. My FE that is used for almost all TV watching generates less than
1MB of log files each day. This is with the default Mythbuntu 8.10
setup.
