I'm using Mythbuntu 8.10 x86_64 bit version.  I suppose I could do that, 
but I would've expected the pre-packaged distros to have everything that 
was needed.  Here's what 8.10 came pre-packaged with (unless a system 
update came across and updated ffmpeg):
