Thanks, Nick -- you're right -- it doesn't seem to be installing, even
with m-a a-i -f ivtv. No matter what I try, only the ivtvfb.ko module
gets installed. weird.

I've always used custom kernels. For this, I've tried 2.6.22,
2.6.24.2, and 2.6.24.4. The problem I've having now with doing that is
that modules supposedly required for pvr-150,

( detailed in this otherwise excellent wiki:
http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Howto )

*do not exist by default in the kernel!!*

Using my .config, there were about 15 or 20 options in
multimedia/video capture devices, but most of the ones required
weren't there, only BT848. I thought maybe they weren't showing up
because I was using a config from an older, pre 2.6.22 kernel. So I
downloaded a brand new 2.6.24.4 and used the default .config (which I
think just gets made when you make menuconfig the first time) -- *and
there were only like 2 or 3 options in video capture!*

So I selected a few more things elsewhere and went back, and suddenly
there were more options in the list, like 5 or 6 this time (none of
which were the ones I need, of course :p). I can't even get it to
re-list the BT848 one it had before. So unless I'm not getting
something, it seems that the idea is I would have to hunt through the
kernel and guess pretty much at random which prerequisites were needed
to allow the correct multimedia options to even show up in the menu to
be selected. Otherwise, there is no ivtv to be found anywhere. Feel
like I'm in the twilight zone. :p

So I guess I'm just going to have to use a pre-made debian kernel >=
2.6.22 that has the correct modules, if I can figure out how to
install it. Like I said, I've never done it on debian before, but
always just used my own. I think somewhere I told apt not to even
download kernels, but that was a couple years ago and I don't remember
where that was now or what I did -- some arcane command I had to
issue, IIRC. yikes, this is getting to be more trouble than it's
worth. I hope these precompiled ones will have all the modules I need
for some of my quirky hardware!

Appreciate any pointers you could link me to on the best way to
install a pre-made kernel, or anything else I might have missed.
