It most certainly *is* an h.264 file, and the audio tracks are AAC. No released version of MPlayer will play the HD-PVR files, but current SVN will, as will ffplay. Your issues have nothing to do with the codecs, but with the variant of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream that the HD-PVR outputs. Mplayer rc2 is from last *October*.
