Another example is the discontinued Sony DHG-HDD500 (or 250) HD
recorder.  That had a cable card slot and, if your cable company
supplies a card that actually worked with it you could record
anything/everything they offered in HD.

I sold mine (a 500) a year ago with the money going towards my mythtv
system...since I used only OTA and had no use for a cable card slot,
the myth system puts it to shame for my purposes.  I got $700 for it
at the time...about $20 less than it cost me a year earlier.

You're right about the lack of demand, but I think it's sort of a
vicious cycle.  Most people never even look into using hardware that's
not from their cable co, so there's little demand.  That also causes
units like the DHG-HD500 to be very expensive and/or discontinued
altogether.

Is anyone other than Tivo even making an HD recorder these days...with
or without a cablecard slot?
