It doesn't work for me, either. However, I'm running 0.20.2-fixes
(through p14430). My hardware:

Frontend only
EPIA C3 Esther @ 1.5Ghz (no XvMC)
512MB
802.11g wifi

I have the same problem with recordings from my PVR-500 and MPEG-4
through the internal player. Commercial skips on recordings work fine,
and fast-forwarding at 3x is smooth as silk.  Up to now, I've blamed
it the wifi connection, though I've never had any other visible signs
of wifi signal / congestion issues. I need to movee the machine back
to my basement to try it out over ethernet to rule it out yet.
