if you do not choose to transcode it when you schedule it, I believe the
default is to not transcode.....someone correct me if Im wrong.

| .mpg files saved by Myth are just what comes out of the ivtv driver by
| default. I presume they are because I can save output directly to a
| file, as in cat /dev/v4l/video0 >test.mpg) and they play so I assume
| Myth isn't really doing anything to my files.
|
| I'd like to investigate transcoding that significantly reduces file
| size since our interests here are less about perfect quality and more
| about saving episodes. We currently run out of disk space about every
| 4-5 days making it hard to take a two week vacation, etc.

thats exactly it, I usually just go through the canned searches on
mythweb for say sci fi and new movies, south park etc, maybe once a week
and record what I havent seen in a while. Im in the same boat as you I
have a fairly small HD, 100 gig, and it fills fast, thats why I use mp4,
after transcode the files are alot smaller, for example :

Jason X ... havent seen this one in forever
Transcode (Finished: Sun Apr 20, 2008, 03:10 PM)
Autodetect: 4.9 GB => 2.2 GB

and

a south park episode
Transcode (Finished: Sat Apr 19, 2008, 11:53 PM)
Autodetect: 1.6 GB => 562.7 MB

as you can see mp4 is about 1/2 the size of .mpg, quite handy when you
have a small HD.
