Not sure about *buntu since I've never used any of them, but if you
have vncserver installed, log in as the user you want to run vnc, then
from the command line, execute vncserrver. It will tell you that it's
putting stuff in the home directory of that user and will by default
start an x server on :1. Then use VNC Client on the remote machine to
connect to your server on port 1.
