Thanks Tom, that is the problem - I had been trying out all the options
and fiddling the number of cpus was one that I touched. I tried again to
recreate the problem but wasn't able to probably because I wasn't
changing the cpus setting. Just tried it now and the FE crashed. I
ultimately gave up on xvmc because it failed to show some recorded HD
programs (all CBS).
