I had the same error you are getting; I was using XBMC's built-in myth client.
If you're able to tune intermittently then you probably aren't getting
a channel lock.
mythfrontend will tell you about this: "You should have gotten a lock by now".

XBMC's myth client currently dumps you back to the channel list when
this happens - which can be very confusing!
