I have a Denon 3806 and love it. The RJ45 port (on the Denon's at
least, and from what I understand any receiver ) is usually just for
firmware updates and some of the newer receivers allow for streaming
radio playback.
In general any good home theater component will have an RS-232 port
for system integration. Other than that there really is no other
command input method other than the remote. You could use an IR
Blaster to control the Denon though. I don't think there are any
systems for allowing a linux PC to talk to RS-232 devices.
