I'm using a WRT-54G with dd-wrt firmware and I can tell you that 
firmware is buggy.  My problems went
away after I put a 3com (older one) dumb switch in front of the router.  
I have only one port connected to the
router. So all my network traffic goes through the switch and if it's 
internet bound it goes to the router.
Works a lot better.  The switches in routers are not known as being good.
