This is why I always use soft. I had so many problems with hard mounts
at work that ended up setting them all to soft. One problem was if a
nfs server was down all my other machines could not reboot because
they sat there waiting forever to connect to the nfs server in order
to close the connection. Since this process would not kill I had to
risk loosing data by hitting the reset button.
