For 500GB I'd say a spare drive is the best, especially at $80 for
such a drive.
For smaller backups DVDs are good, especially the dual-layer ones, now
that the media is cheaper.
The previously-mentioned "free" offsite backup by using Google Mail is
good if you have a pretty fast network connection. Residential DSL or
cable modem lines are usually NOT good for this as their upstream
speed is usually dog slow.
I use DLT tape but only because I got the drives and tapes free, if
you had to pay current prices they are way too expensive for consumer
use. Even so 500GB would take up a LOT of tapes.
