There are two different variants. The 7200.10's are the standard consumer
line. The ES series is the enterprise line. Designed for more continuous
24x7 operation, and also have a higher tolerance for vibrations introduced
from other drives; placed in a tight enclosure, one drive's activity can cause
the neighboring drive to miss its read/write it was lined up for.

At least that is the theory, otherwise they have nearly the same specs,
life, etc. I've seen a few reviews that they might be a bit faster, but I
wouldn't hold my breath.

The older 500/750 drives are the 7200.10 / ES.1 lines. The new
1000GB drives are 7200.11 / ES.2 lines, a whole new generation of
perpendicular drives from Seagate. The new line is also supposed
to be available in 750 and 500GB sizes, but I couldn't find any in
the US anyway; I doubt they will be big sellers.

Besides the ES.1 / ES.2 name, the part numbers end in "NS" vs "AS" for
the 7200.10 / 7200.11 drives. And usually run a little more expensive.
However the 1000GB drives are so new, I only found a few vendors
that even had them, so it was tough comparing the price difference
between them. But when newegg had the ES.2 drives (my preference),
I wasn't complaining.

Until early last week, I though only Hitachi had 1000GB drives even
readily available, I thought the Seagates were still yet to be released,
and I didn't know they were a new generation.
