Not so sure. Yes the drivers do change. They fix bugs, they add features. They
don't however break backwards compatibility.

In fact, if you wanted to use a RAID that you built on linux 2.2 in 1999 it
would probably still work. Even if you built it on SCSI drives, dd/copied the
partitions to IDE drives, then SATA drives...
That's not the kind of moving target I'd complain about.

Whereas I'm equally sure the ISA or MCA hardware RAID card you may have used
circa 1999 wouldn't be quite so happy in that spare PCI, sorry, PCI-X, sorry,
PCI-E slot :)
