I don't see why you call this a hack. I just use the builtin features
of the backend. As the backend perfectly knows when the next recording
starts, and can set a proper wakeup time itself, it sound's like a good
solution for you.

The only hack I use is a patch to workaround a bug described in
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3597. If you don't use EIT, or set
the idle time to a very short time (e.g. less than a minute) then you
don't need the patch.
