Besides, $$$$$$. Do you all realize how expensive it is to maintain
closed-source binary-only software releases for all the many varied
flavors of GNU/Linux distributions and with the rapid pace of
development of things like GCC, the kernel, and, well, GNU/Linux...
Releasing a closed-source binary-only driver is one thing--and I'm still
amazed that NVIDIA feels it's worthwhile to do such (especially
considering how much cheaper (I feel the real cost of) releasing specs
would be--i.e. I don't subscribe to their paranoid "lose our competitive
advantage" statements)--as it only relies on the kernel interfaces.
Couple that with all the dependencies of an application, and you have to
be the size of Oracle to even consider it. I doubt that a company
selling hacked satellite STB's of questionable legality is that size
(however, I will guess that the intent of their business is to turn a
profit).
