[mythtv-users] The Bigger... Disk contest, Fall 2007 edition

Since you directed the question to something I wrote :-)

I've got a gentoo box with 10 320 gig ide drives in a software raid 5 that
is plum full. Its also loud and hot. It's got another drive in it that I
use to boot off of and a DVDRW. I use this box for ripping DVDs (that
aren't sony protected) and CDs. It runs headless (as does my other file
server and my mythbackend). It's uptime is measured in months.

I have another server running unraid with a bunch of $100 500 gig SATA
drives in it. Much quieter, faster and easier to manage than the gentoo
box. Nice thing about unraid is that it boots off a memory stick, so no
need for another drive (which would cost more and take up space in the
box). I write this this guy over gigE from my myth backend that has three
KWorld PCI 110/115 cards hooked up to my TimeWarner cable (where I mostly
record QAM HD). So far I've not seen any problems with 3 simultaneous HD
streams. I'm waiting for 1tb drives to get cheaper to expand this array
(which unraid makes easier)
