The benefit of SVN is that you can only compile the options you need 
enabled. This results in smaller/tighter executables and may make your 
system more stable. With an optimized build I am able to playback HD 
material on my wimpy AthlonXP processor. With the bloated packaged 
version I never even came close.

As to your question about is it worth it to get the last few updates? 
For me that answer is yes however you should probably read the commits 
list to see what has changed in those last few updates to see if its 
worth it for you.  Compiling your own is nothing to be afraid of, the 
hard part is installing all the software and devel packages.
