I use Mythtv (compiled from Trunk SVN every so often) on Ubuntu (linux).
A friend uses Beyond TV (a comercial Windows application, costing about
150 with all the extras, remote front ends, etc...)
Hands down, Beyond TV is easier, and just works.
If you want something that works, I recommend you go buy an HD Tivo (or
a standard tivo if you don't want HD yet, you can probably buy one used
cheaply).
The above comments aside, I still use MythTV because it is more
powerful, more configurable, and more expandable.
(Also, I enjoy tinkering...)
If you do not enjoy tinkering, don't do it! Run away! Run away very far!
Mythtv is NOT an appliance (as in Tivo), and it's not an application (as
in Beyond TV). It is a very complicated, only partially tested suite of
beta programs.
To get the features I wanted to work (Silicon Dust HD Homerun Tuner,
Schedules Direct, Weather Info Center) I had to upgrade to Subversion
Trunk (the latest developer codebase) which has it's own set of annoying
bugs. If you can use a stable distribution of MythTV, try that first to
see if it will meet your needs. Only jump to SVN Trunk (compiling your
own code based upon the developer updates) if you absolutely need to.
MythTV can either be a very good way to learn about Linux/Unix and PVR's
in general, or it will be a huge time draw that will frustrate you
terribly. (indeed, it is likely to be a huge time draw in either case)
If you have the time and like to tinker, go for it. If you just want
something that works, buy a Tivo or Beyond TV setup.
