yes in mythtv setup you can add this for the external channel change
command: /usr/local/bin/sa3250ch -s
also, to use the channel changer script from within myth you need to allow
the mythtv user to own the firewire connection when myth is running.

I wish that made it work but it doesn't.
i don't know what distro you are on but some of the tips in the above link
helped me to get things running. like you i'm not capturing off of firewire
just wanted it to change channels with firewire.
