the only way I know of a way to test the firewire connection for encryption 
or filtering is to use the following commands.

sudo test-mpeg2
and you can redirect that mplayer, if it plays then you have a "clear" 
channel. if not, it's definitely encrypted.

then you have to use sudo firewire_tester with the -R option to reset the 
firewire bus if you tried to capture a channel that was encrypted.

Unfortunately, you have to do this on every single channel that you want to 
test, you first set the stb to that channel, then try to capture the stream, 
then if mplayer plays it, then you move on. So on and so forth.

You're lucky you could get firewire channel changing to work. I can't even 
get that working, I have a sa3250hd and no one has been able to help me. The
