Aha!

I mount the NFS volume with "rsize=32768,wsize=32768", and I note that
the local size is not a multiple of 32k while the remote size is.

I'll change that and see what happens... Erk?! The apparent size has got
bigger, not smaller!

Yep, it's consistent: take out those parameters from fstab, remount, and
the volume size goes up to 721075840; put them back, remount, and it's
back at 721075744.

Sorry? I make it a difference of 721075744 - 721075720 = 24kiB. Which
fits the new threshold and NOW IT WORKS :-)))
