If you have an nvidia 4 or 5 series card, try using the tip in the
Greyscale OSD section of the XvMC page:

I've done this on mine - OK you lose the transparent OSD, but fonts
are rendered on top of the video and independently of the video
source, so they're at the monitor's native resolution.
