[mythtv-users] Alternate VS Desktop Video driver.

So far i have had limited luck with this system using Ubuntu 7.04 and mythtv
but i have not given up yet.
My current question is.

When i install a backend+frontend my video playback in crappy. horrid and
sometimes worse.
When i install desktop. then add on backend and front end it is perfect.
however it is a slow as a backend server.
I have a ati 9700 pro as my video card. i use the default video diver in the
desktop build and the alternate build
Is there a way to use the driver that desktop installs on the alternate?

Kind of a linus/noob but not clueless.

specs.
INTEL 3.2 celeronD
INTel mobo and chipset ( not sure which chipset off hand)
SDA 74gb WD raptor drive
HDA 300gb WD
1gb RAM.
