You can change the fan speed using your dashboard settings.

I use an Xbox as a 2nd frontend. I find it slow to boot linux if
running the fully functional mythfrontend. However, you do have some
other options if you just want it for playback and nothing else - just
play the files back from the MyVideos section of XBMC, or better still
use xbmcmythtv which is an interface written in python that runs under
XBMC. Botf of the XBMC options are good because the boot time is
lightning fast and they do the job of playing back. However these
frontends won't let you do certain things that a proper mythfrontend
will.

One thing to note with XBMC is that you will need to download a
patched mplayer.dll if you wat to play back transcoded recordings
because default mplayer doesn't support the MythTV NUV format.
