I assume that the problem is only with certain displays. I will use a
1680x1050 resolution here, too. But the screen stays black because the
mode is regarded as invalid by the TFT. Whereas xorg claims to use a 60
Hz mode, the TFT shows 56 Hz. However, these 56 Hz are not the real
problem as the TFT also worked with 50 Hz in the past. It just shows
that xorg doesn't really generated the mode that it printed in the log
file.
