Thanks for trying to help!

This problem is so bad for me that I changed
the /etc/init.d/mythbackend script to keep start the backend without
the --daemon option and keep restarting it every time it exits.

I guess, if no one can suggest any solution or somewhere to look into,
I might re-install the entire system, although, I am not sure what that
would accomplish since I would be following the exact same process.

I could also try and boot an older 2.6.18 kernel and see how that
behaves.
