I'm not referring to labels in fstab but rather UUIDs.  UUIDs are the
guaranteed way to find a disk device no matter where in your system
architecture it is and be able to address it in an architecture
independent way.  If when manually managing your /etc/fstab you'd used
UUIDs you wouldn't have had this problem.

No tools necessary.  Just use the UUID of the disk/partition.  To get
that:

$ uuidgen /dev/sda1
5370e7ad-4427-4a83-949c-e65775cb0e76

b.
