I actually tried that, and in my case it didn't help.  I'm at a loss to
explain why.  But I live in a 1970s-era apartment complex and a lot of
the grounding is kind of dodgy.  I've since moved to a larger apartment
in the same complex, and while I no longer have ground loop problems, I
recently discovered that there's a whole bank of outlets in one bedroom
where the ground pins are disconnected entirely.  This is kind of par
for the course with older construction, in my experience.
