I do have the latest ivtv installed so I think I am good there.

I do know that the tuners are different.
PVR-150

As one would expect thee the tuner model is the same for both the 500  
tuners

Yes the order in modconf is more for convenience of discussion - the  
cards are found in different orders depending on pci slot etc. and I  
don't really have any real expectations of order at this point.

I think have come across the 'option' element in google searches - I  
will see if I can find an example that works. I assume it will follow  
the same pattern as for when used with multiple cards of differing  
types? (I think that is the scenario the examples I have seen follow.)

Adding something like the following at the end of the modprobe.conf  
should work?:
# force tuner options for tuner cards
option tuner = 1,50,57
