I didn't need to set a modeline.

I just used 915resolution to set a new mode.

then changed the /etc/default/915resultion to use that new mode and resolution

set the resolution in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and got it going.

This never worked with the dvi->hdmi, but as soon as I switched to
vga, it worked perfect.  But I found a limitation in the specs of the
tv that explained this.  Sorry I can't be more of a help.
