512 is barely enough memory to keep a combined system out of swap so you
might think about a bit more memory. Swap is the devil :)

Try a low overhead windows manager like rat poison and turning off all
the services you dont need. Those changes took my 512MB system from
swapping ~200Mb  to not swapping at all. Got rid of almost all the pauses.
