Thanks Nick

I've not had Mythtv up and running yet since a format and re-instal, so 
there's nothing that needs backing up.

I'll remove mysql-server and mythtv-database again, then do the

# sudo rm -rf /var/lib/mysql/

thing, then reinstall mysql-server and mythtv-database. Hopefully 
that'll get me somewhere.
