I had a similar problem, on Gentoo, running a mid-December SVN version.

I don't know what triggered it, but I think the reason it's not starting 
has something to do with which user is trying to launch the process. 
Anything coming out of rc.local I'm sure is root, so you might want to 
try doing something with that.

I tried that for awhile and didn't get anywhere, so ended up with 
something like this:

/usr/local/bin/mtd > /dev/null 2>&1 &

which works, but then I started having problems with DVD playback & 
sometimes burning, so I have to manually close mtd when that happens 
(this is all very speculative still).

Good luck.  Post if you come up with a better solution than mine.
