TiVo pays a huge whopping chunk of money to a national dialup
ISP (or three) and have their devices call up, establish a PPP
connection, and download from a large server farm. Or two.

They encourage people to hook up their TiVos to LANs so that the
dialup hours go down.

That rarely happens with well-run news servers.

It used to happen all the time.
