Essentially, in a few different ways. TMS posted their position many
many months ago and made it pretty clear what could happen.
I think the sale of commercial systems that depended on Zap2It to be
functional is what bothered them the most. I suspect the vendors selling
the systems saw it as the user getting the data, not the vendor, so both
sides felt they were in the right.
I wonder if the claim is just a smokescreen though. I suspect the Boys
on the Left Coast might have something to do with it. I find the date
interesting, I know of at least one other service that's making major
changes on that date in the name of "protecting content".
Then there's all the references on this list to ripping DVDs, something
known to upset the H'Wood types. Even if the rips were being made
legally (non-USA, non-CSS disks) this was often not made clear in the
posts, the Movie Moguls will assume the worst and our side will never be
heard.
But this is all speculation of course, I've been out of that business
for quite a while.
